How to perform a clean reload of the BlackBerry Device Software using the Application Loader

This post is for those blackberry users who need assistance in BlackBerry device software reload. This process is also known as OS reload of BlackBerry Smart phone.

Requirement:

  • BlackBerry Desktop Manager software 4.1 and later
  • BlackBerry Device software
  • BlackBerry smartphone
  • Windows based PC with USB port and BlackBerry data cable

If you do not have BlackBerry Desktop Manager and BlackBerry Device software installed on your computer then you can download it from HERE. Once downloaded, remember to install first the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and then Blackberry Device software.

Procedure:

Note: You should not install BlackBerry Device Software that is earlier than the version installed on the BlackBerry smartphone. Doing so could cause the BlackBerry smartphone to malfunction.

For e.g. On your BlackBerry 8310 if you already have V4.5 device software then there is no point in installing V4.2 device software, doing so could cause the BlackBerry to malfunction.

Before proceeding, make sure that the latest version of BlackBerry Device Software is installed on the computer by completing the following steps:

  1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  2. Click Help.
  3. Select About Desktop Manager from the menu and click the Device Software tab.
  4. Confirm that the BlackBerry Device Software displayed is the latest version currently available from the wireless service provider.  Help11

1) Back up the BlackBerry smartphone before proceeding

BlackBerry device users can perform a full or selective backup of the data using the Backup and Restore tool in BlackBerry Desktop Manager by completing the following steps:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer running BlackBerry Desktop Manager
  2. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager
  3. Double-click Backup and Restore
  4. Select Backup to perform a full backup or select Advanced to perform a backup of specific databases
  5. Choose a location to save the backup file, then click Save

2) Blackberry Software installation process:

To perform a clean install of the BlackBerry Device Software using BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 perform the following steps:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager
  2. Double-click the Application Loader icon
  3. Click Add/Remove Applications
  4. Type your BlackBerry smartphone password, if prompted and click OK
  5. Click the check boxes next to the names of the applications you want to load
  6. Click Settings,*(Desktop Manger 4.5 & 4.6 has Options tab below instead of Settings) and then click the check boxes beside Delete all application data and Erase all currently installed applications A_Options
  7. Click Ok -> Next
  8. Click Finish. It will take atleast 25-30 minutes to complete the entire process. During this time, make sure, your computer is ON and BlackBerry remain connected to the computer.
  9. When the process has completed, the message The loading operation was successful will appear. Click Main Menu to return to BlackBerry Desktop Manager

Note: The Delete all application data and Delete all currently installed applications options are not available when using the Application Loader in BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.5. To workaround this issue, use the Application Loader standalone file by performing the following steps:

  1. Open My Computer (or Computer on Windows Vista).
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  3. Run the Loader.exe file and follow steps 3 through 9 to complete a clean installation of the BlackBerry Device Software.

3) How to restore data or databases from backup files to BlackBerry smartphone

To restore all the data in the backup file to your BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to your computer
  2. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager
  3. Double-click Backup and Restore
  4. Click Restore
  5. Navigate to the backup file you want to restore to your BlackBerry smartphone
  6. Double-click the backup (.ipd) file (Created during Step1)

To restore specific databases in the backup file to your BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

  2. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  3. Click Backup and Restore.
  4. Click Advanced.

Additional Info

Guys, before I begin, let me say that I did find a code that come up each and every time I’ve tried loggng on to my home network or an outside Hot Spot. Error code W002. There is another code I found in the Phone under networks on the phone of W006 aswell.

However, I went back tried it again and it showed up Connected! And on the screen it showed I was connected.
Once again, I’ve tried outside networks and was able to log-on, however was not able to bring any web-sights up. (No matter with using Opera Mini or the Browser on the Blackberry) Only with the Data Plan tunred on (EDGE in Captiols) will the phone will access the web…

Obiously, the last resort is a clean sweep of this OS. I’m up to the challenge. And I follwoed your instructions by downloading the latest Blackberry version of 6.0 to on my laptop.

I’ve read the instructions that you snet of doing a clean sweep, but a little confused since it mentiones back ups and saving others programs. So guys, I have the sight, but are there parts of the instructions I should over-look?
    1) I saving anything or backing anything up from the existing operating system? Do I dump everything.
    2) And where will the new OS come from? The new down loaded 6.0 now on my PC?

I’ve decided to wait to I hear back to from before proceeding. There is nothing on this Blackberry I need to keep (that I know of) other than a few pictures, and all on my contacts are already saved to my Sim Card. So, I’me ready to move on and hopefully get this unlocked Blackberry T-Moble 8320 that I purached via Ebay surfing the web, without using my Data Plan from my wireless carrier Cincinnati Bell.

So, if you can assit, you’ll be the first and only folks who have educsted thus far and steered me straight. I have about lost my wits ends in trying to find help. Gave up, and thought about re-selling this puppy back on Ebay.

    Sincerly,
    Dave

  6. The error code you have mentioned are related to your Wi-Fi router and your internet connection. See what RIM says: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB14605. Those are not related to your BlackBerry device. Do you want to test it with other Wi-Fi network and see what happens?

Will walk you through OS reload process. It may look complicated, but in fact very easy.
    ——————
Before you do OS reload – Couple of things to note:
    - It may go wrong – as you have unlocked BlackBerry. (It may not allow you to do what’s working now. Kindly do not blame us if it fails as it’s unlocked device)
    - You need two software to be installed on your laptop
1.) BlackBerry Desktop Manager (DM – 4.6 or above)
2.) Actual BlackBerry Device OS for 8320 (Here is the conflict for unlocked device – Your Original BlackBerry has OS from T-Mobile and your Carrier (C..Bell) has different OS).. I will advise you to click here http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp .. select Cincinnati Bell Inc. and download and install the OS for 8320 to your laptop.
    —–
    - You have to do Step 1 for now.
Step 1: Take the Full Back up (Dump everything from your device to laptop)
Once you are done with Back up and before you proceed with Step 2, let me know I need to give you more instructions which I will email you. I am trying to find easy way for you and see if some from my team can assist you remotely. What is your Time Zone by the way. We are in Toronto (EST#-5) – Mike
