Tether earlier known as TetherBerry has updated their software to version 1.1.0.2 with a faster user interface, Bluetooth selection and a few other bug fixes. Tether allows you to access the internet with a PC or Mac by “tethering” your BlackBerry to it and using its data. For those who are new to this app, do keep in mind that while setting up Tether you need to install one desktop software on your laptop and other mobile app on your BlackBerry device.

If you are already using the BBSAK which we have covered many times here on this blog and you want to get more out of what standard BlackBerry Desktop Manger provides on Windows PC, you should definitely give a shot to this windows software called BlackBerry Master Control Program aka MCP which recently got updated to version 0.9.3.0 beta 5 with added features.

I would say BlackBerry Master Control Program (BBCMP) is one of the most useful applications for BlackBerry addicts and experts. It has tons of functions that simplify the process of interacting with your BlackBerry from your Windows PC packaged up in a nice graphical user interface.

What amazed me  about this software is the announcement that BBMCP has been downloaded over half a million times! That is a pretty big achievement for a niche BlackBerry tool.

The BlackBerry Desktop Manager for PC updated to v5.0.1.28 with “Desktop Redirector” feature added to the main user interface. Now the new version includes “Email Settings” which is actually the old “Desktop Redirector”, where you can have Microsoft Outlook redirect emails to your BlackBerry in real time from PC. To provide more info the PC has to be ON (running) 24/7 and connected to the Internet and only the Microsoft Exchange emails without attachments are redirected to the device.

I am not sure why this Desktop Redirector is an integral part of the main user interface but I believe this should help resolve the issues with conflict in email service books with Desktop Redirector and BIS emails on the device.

Important Note: After installing this version, when you connect your BlackBerry and see the prompt as shown in above image about your email associated with Enterprise Server and prompt you to generate encryption keys, select NO. If you select yes, then it might create conflicts with your BIS/BES email service books you already have on your device.

Quick Tip: If you have selected Yes, to the above prompt and want to disable the Desktop Redirector then on your desktop manager from the main menu, Go to Email Settings, Advanced and uncheck the Override address box.

RIM today released the BlackBerry Media Sync 3.0. BlackBerry Media Sync is a windows software which allows you to transfer media files from iTunes or Media Player music collection from computer to a BlackBerry smartphone. The exciting new features in this version are support for picture synchronization and improved user interface.

Picture Synchronizaton

Picture synchronization has been added as a new feature in BlackBerry Media Sync version 3.0.

• Picture Optimization

  By default pictures that are synchronized to a BlackBerry smartphone using BlackBerry Media Sync version 3.0 will not be resized. An option can be enabled to allow the pictures that are syncrhonized to be resized to save space on the BlackBerry smartphone.

• Bidirectional transfer of Pictures

  Pictures can be imported from the BlackBerry smartphone to a computer and synchonized from the computer to the BlackBerry smartphone using BlackBerry Media Sync version 3.0. By default pictures transferred from the BlackBerry will appear in a folder named ‘BlackBerry’ within your My Pictures folder. This location can be changed within the Options menu of the Pictures tab in BlackBerry Media Sync version 3.0.

  Note: The action of importing pictures from the BlackBerry smartphone, and the action of synchronizing pictures to the BlackBerry smartphone are not combined under a single unified synchronization button. For more information please see KB19902.

• Supported Picture formats (BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG)

  The above extensions represent the types of pictures that can be transferred from a computer to the BlackBerry smartphone using BlackBerry Media Sync version 3.0.

Improved User Interface

The user interface within BlackBerry Media Sync version 3.0 has been redesigned to improve navigation, and provide more information regarding playlist section and supported songs. As noted above picture support has now been added and you can switch between Music and Pictures by clicking the associated tabs.

Note: Each tab has its own ‘Sync’ button in the bottom right corner of the program. Any changes or selections made on each tab for Music and Picture require the associated Sync button to be pressed for the changes or selections to be applied.

This is the official update for BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Windows, now the new version is sitting v5.0.1 with new added feature IP Modem. It’s a strange this time RIM is offering this as "service pack" for Desktop Manager rather than the regular updated version. The new version include bug fixes and a new feature called IP Modem which now allows you to use BlackBerry as a Tethered modem to get on the Internet.
